BMW has previewed the next version of its M3 sports coupe
together with the news that it will be powered by an all-new V8 engine.
Shown as a concept car at the recent Geneva Motor Show the new M3 will
be based on the current BMW 3 Series Coupe released here late last year.
BMW M cars are among the most desirable and
affordable sports cars in the world. Modified versions of standard
BMW cars that are aimed at the driving enthusiast, but suitable
for everyday driving, they are built by a subsidiary of the German
car maker, BMW M GmbH (also known as M-Technik or just M, for
Motorsport).
Formed in 1972 to enhance BMW’s racing programme, BMW M,
branched out into the production of road cars in the late 1970s
and has subsequently produced modified versions of most BMW
models. Enhancements include modified engines, firmer suspension,
distinctive interior trim and body kits.
Although the new M3 will have the same profile as
the 3 Series Coupe, only the doors, boot lid and head and tail
lamps will be carried over. The standout features are likely to be
the new bulging bonnet with its prominent powerdome and large air
vents.
To enable the bigger engine to breathe efficiently
there are three large air intakes in the front apron while the
front guards carry the traditional M gills. At the rear there’s
an understated boot lip spoiler to keep the M3’s feet firmly on
the ground.
With a capacity of 4.0 litres the V8 generates
309kW of power and maximum torque of 400 Newton metres at 3900
rpm. Enhancing this extra grunt, at just 202kg, the new V8 is one
of the lightest in the world, indeed it is 15kg lighter than the
outgoing six.
The new BMW M3 is expected here towards the end of
the year. Although no pricing information is available at this
stage it will be slightly dearer than the $140,000 price tag on
the current M3 coupe.
The 3.2-litre straight-six in the current M3 is a
gem so if, as expected, the new V8 is even better then drivers are
in for a real treat. Needless to say, we can’t wait.
