NEW FACE FOR OUTLANDER?

By EWAN KENNEDY
20 April 2009

Mitsubishi has unveiled an SUV called the Outlander GT Prototype at the New York Auto Show. But this isn't a prototype as we know it, rather than being a very early stage in the development of an all-new design, it looks to us like a major facelift of the existing model.

Naturally, Mitsubishi refuses to confirm or deny this, but there are some clues on the future of this model. Because the press information supplied at the time of the unveiling talks of modifications to the existing V6 engine to improve its power, torque and lower the emission levels.

As well there are changes to the shift program in the current automatic transmission, and the ability for it to idle in neutral when the Outlander is stationary.

But enough of the mechanical upgrades, grab a look at that stunning new front end. A design clearly inspired by the latest Lancer range, with real elements of the hot Evo X in its detail and sheer size. As well as the huge grille, there is a new look to all the visible panels in front of the windscreen, and reshaped door mirrors. At the back there's a new design for the rear bumper. And the side sills have been revised.

Sounds like a big facelift, not a prototype to us!

Time will tell. The only thing we are nervous about is that the huge ‘jet fighter’ grille may be dumbed down if the board of directors at Mitsubishi get an attack of cold feet. Let's hope that doesn’t happen.
