Jim Richards is arguably the most popular racing car driver of all
time in Australia. The fascinating thing about this guy is that he
appeals to everyone, not just the revheads. Bored wives and
girlfriends watching car racing on TV with their partners support
Jim during the races even when they have no real interest in
what’s going on.
Such is the charm of the man that his nickname is still
‘Gentleman’ Jim despite his much publicised, and televised,
insults to race fans after the 1991 Bathurst 1000 which he won in
a Nissan Skyline GTR he was sharing with Mark Skaife. That was
only one of his seven victories in Australia's most famous car
race. Only Peter Brock has won more Bathursts than Jim Richards.
As motoring journalists we have met Jim on many occasions, and
even been taken for thrill rides in cars around several race
